Given the extreme nursing shortage, why does a RN need a Strategic Career Plan?

The United States nursing shortage continues to be a complex recruiting challenge for hospitals. While there are literally thousands of jobs for RN's across the country the key is finding the right job which meets individual needs, wants and goals. Finding the right job is multi-faceted requiring serious consideration to all aspects of the work- life balance.

There will always be staff nursing positions available. However, the more important question should be is the position you want available and are you qualified.

Every healthcare professional needs to look beyond their current position. A Strategic Career Plan incorporates Candidates goals, provides national statistical salary and employment information and sets expectations while implementing short and long term tasks for success.

How does someone create a Strategic Career Plan?

The best way to create a Strategic Career is to consult an expert. Getting objective information from a national prospective is key. Everyone needs a Career Coach, even me!

So often a nurse will float his/her resume, "just to see what's out there." The result is a lot of calls and emails with offers that may have nothing to do with the nurse's wants, needs or goals. Floating a resume without a plan is often just a waste of time and energy unless you have a Strategic Career Plan to back it up.

What are some of the questions you ask a Candidate?

1. Regardless of location or income. If you could have any job, what would it be?

2. Let's assume you find that job. What kind of community do you want to live in?

3. Okay, Let's assume you have that job in that community. What's next? What type of position are you working towards for your next strategic career step?

A serious and motivated Candidate is open to relocation for the right opportunity, is available to start a new position in 30-60 days and is looking for a career not just a job in healthcare.

What do hospitals like to see in a prospective employee?

Despite the nursing shortage most hospitals have not lowered the bar in terms of employee competency and expectations. Actually, just the opposite has happened. The clinical requirements for staff nurses continue to increase as hospitals seek to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction scores. At the leadership level, hospitals look for RN’s with a broad acute care background, a minimum of two years of leadership and preferably a MBA/MSN.

A nurse who is passionate about providing the highest standards of patient care at every level will typically be a positive and motivated healthcare professional at every level. A hospital can give a nurse all of the tools to be a great clinical nurse or manager. However, a hospital can't motivate a nurse to love his/her job, motivate others and be driven towards excellence. That comes from within.

Staffing Firm Launches Reality Show to Combat Nursing Shortage

First Webisode Premieres November 23, 2005

San Diego, Calif. – November 22, 2005 -- Access Nurses, a national nurse staffing company, is combating the nation’s nursing shortage and encouraging more people to enter the profession by changing the image of nursing through it’s new reality show, 13 Weeks.

By creating a show about six travel nurses on a dream assignment in southern California, Access Nurses shines a spotlight on the unsung heroes of medicine. Travel nurses are highly qualified healthcare professionals who travel the country working in hospitals with acute needs for thirteen weeks at a time. 13 Weeks will showcase the very intense and challenging hospital work environment, the thrill of exploring Southern California, and the demands of living with five new roommates.

“Nurses have traditionally been portrayed in the media as helpers and assistants. Nurses are heroes and on 13 Weeks they will be shown as compassionate and compelling protagonists.” says Alan Braynin, CEO of Access Nurses.

Access Nurses’ mission with the show is to encourage more people to enter the nursing profession by highlighting the tremendous skill, benevolence and dedication of nurses and the adventure and excitement of the travel nurse lifestyle.

Access Nurses will release the first in a series of webisodes on the 13 Weeks website (www.nursetv.com). Each one will provide insight into the characters’ lives and reveal some of their individual experiences in Southern California. A new webisode will be unveiled each Wednesday starting November 23, 2005.

The full show, to be released in 2006, will consist of thirteen 30 minute episodes. Access Nurses is producing the show in conjunction with San Diego based Raw Productions.

Hospital footage shot at Western Medical Centers Anaheim, Western Medical Center Santa Ana, Chapman Medical Center in Orange and Coastal Communities Hospital in Santa Ana, captures the challenging and rewarding efforts of each nurse.

Hospitals across the nation are having a difficult time filling nursing positions, a need that is expected to grow as the baby-boomers continue to age. The United States Department of Labor predicts that the country will have over 800,000 unfilled nursing positions by the year 2020.

Spotlight on Per Diem Nursing Part 1

Per diem nursing offers unique flexibility and top pay. Nurses can pick up per diem shifts when and where they want on a full or part-time basis. Per diem nursing is helpful to hospitals that find themselves short-staffed on a particular day. For nurses, per diem offers a unique employment opportunity . Some nurses work exclusively in per diem nursing, which affords them a great pay rate along with the flexibility of working only on days they feel like working. Other nurses take per diem shifts to supplement their existing income. With per diem, a nurse can work on their day off and earn up to $500 for one shift. Do that once a month and you have a new car payment taken care of.

Today, we are focusing on Per Diem nursing in Orange County and Los Angeles and we are talking to Chris Harris, a Per Diem scheduler for Access Nurses.

Q: Chris, what is the main benefit of working per diem?

A: Work when and where you want! You can choose to take shifts for extra holiday pay, as a regular supplement to your income or you can do it full-time and pick your schedule every week. There are really two main reasons; you can make good money and, of course, the flexibility.

Q: With holidays coming up are more nurses looking for per diem nursing?

A: The hospital needs in the flu season tend to increase, and it works out great for nurses looking to help pay for their holiday shopping. Those presents add up and a shift or two here and there can help pay it off.

Q: What are the opportunities like in Orange County and Los Angeles?

A: There are a lot of hospitals in the area, for example a nurse in Fountain Valley can probably get to about 20 hospitals in 20 minutes. The amount of hospitals in this area makes it that much more convenient to work per diem.

Q: Are there opportunities for nurses who do not live in Orange County or Los Angeles?

A: Of course, we offer per diem opportunities in many different locales. In some areas, per diem needs are so great that we offer short term travel assignments in which nurses are contracted to work per diem shifts.
